For the celebrations of 14th of February, people have started to give different excuses such as, since it is a day of love, promoting love and harmony. We shouldn’t be spreading hatred against such a lovely day. There already is a lot of hatred spreading around. Instead of struggling to eliminate all the hate, why protest against a love-day?

This argument can be answered clearly. If it were about spreading love, there wouldn’t be any opposition. The conflict lies in the history of this day promoting illegal relationships and against the values on which our society stands.

Valentine’s Day was named after a Pope who secretly had an intimate relationship with the daughter of the jailer he was prisoned at. He was caught and got killed on the 14th of Feb. It was the Roman time in the 3rd century A.D. His martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day. The outrage was expected thus everyone remembered the day as the day of love.

Knowing about this Roman history makes us think, what link it has with the Muslims? Have we forgotten our own culture and values? Does it not conflict with what our ethics teach us?
